What are the 12 palaces in Zi Wei Dou Shu?
If you already know Western houses, palaces can look like a Chinese rename of the same wheel. They are not. In Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) a palace is a life department — career, wealth, relationship, allies — with a star team and a timing clock. The consult question is which department is jammed, not “who am I.”
Companion reads: Zi Wei vs Western astrology · Push years vs hold years.
Start from the stuck point, not a tour
A useful session does not recite all twelve palaces. It maps the pain you actually have:
- Busy but money will not stick → Wealth + Career
- Relationships that almost work → Relationship + the year window
- Workplace envy / politics → Career + Allies
- Help that never closes → Allies timing
Then we ask whether that cluster is in a push window (visibility and closes) or a hold window (proof and repair). Two ambitious people can need opposite moves in the same calendar year.
The twelve departments (English working names)
Names vary by school. This is the consult-room map we use with English clients — not a full textbook.
| Palace | What we inspect |
|---|---|
| Life / Self | How you occupy a decade — not a personality slogan |
| Siblings / Peers | Equals, rivals, “same-level” friction |
| Spouse / Relationship | Partnership pacing; almost-relationships |
| Children / Output | Projects, creative output, what you generate |
| Wealth | Cash that sticks vs busy income that leaks |
| Health / Illness | Capacity and recovery — not a medical diagnosis |
| Travel / Movement | Moves, travel, relocation windows |
| Friends / Allies | Help that closes vs help that evaporates |
| Career / Official | Work identity, visibility, workplace politics |
| Property / Assets | Base, housing, longer-hold resources |
| Fortune / Virtue | Ease, luck-feel, spiritual bandwidth |
| Parents / Authority | Bosses, parents, institutional power |
Western houses can talk similar topics. Zi Wei still adds which department is loud this decade/year, which is why English clients keep both maps.
Stars are the staff; cycles are the calendar
Major stars describe how a department tends to behave. Decade and annual cycles describe when that behavior is expensive or cheap. A “difficult” wealth palace in a hold year is a different instruction than the same palace in a push year. The chart is not a curse list.
Personality is not the missing piece. Season might be.
What a Written Clarity actually covers
A Written Clarity names the palace cluster, says push vs hold for the near window, and gives three actions — all in writing. It cannot tour the whole natal chart. The fuller map is the Deep Life Reading. Neither is medical, legal, or investment advice.
FAQ
Are palaces the same as Western houses?
They rhyme, they are not a 1:1 map. Palaces are life departments with star teams and decade/annual pacing. Do not translate house-by-house.
Do I need to learn all twelve before a consult?
No. A Written Clarity starts from one stuck point and inspects the two or three palaces that actually matter.
Do I need exact birth time?
Exact hour is best because palace placement can shift. If unknown, we narrow a window and mark what is uncertain.
Is a “bad” palace a life sentence?
No. Stars describe how a department tends to behave; timing describes when that behavior is loud. The product is pacing, not a curse.
